Add or remove Shopify products from collections in bulk
Add or remove Shopify products from collections in bulk
Mixtable lets you manage Shopify manual collection membership with a spreadsheet. You can filter your products, choose collections from a picker, apply the same change to many rows, preview the result, and intentionally sync it to Shopify.
This guide covers two useful approaches:
- Edit each product’s complete manual collection list when you want to see its current memberships
- Use Add to Collections and Remove from Collections Action columns when you want to add or remove specific memberships without replacing the rest
Important: These controls manage manual collections. Products enter or leave Shopify automated collections when their data meets or stops meeting the collection’s rules. For example, if an automated collection uses product tags, bulk edit the Shopify tags that control the rule.
Start with the Collections template
The fastest setup uses Mixtable’s ready-made Collections template:
- Install Mixtable Spreadsheet Editor
- From the Mixtable dashboard, click Create Spreadsheet
- Open the Organization group and select Collections
- Choose your connected Shopify store if prompted
- Open the Product Collections worksheet
The template creates two worksheets:
- Collections has one row per Shopify collection and is useful for editing collection details
- Product Collections has one row per product and is the worksheet used to change manual collection membership
The Product Collections worksheet already includes the product title, handle, Add to Collections, Remove from Collections, and Product’s Manual Collections columns.
Filter the products you want to change
Before making a large update, narrow the worksheet to the right products:
- Click Filter in the Mixtable toolbar
- Open the filter in a useful column, such as Title or Product’s Manual Collections
- Set the condition that identifies the products you want to change
You can add more Shopify data columns, such as vendor, product type, or tags, when those fields make the group easier to identify. Filtering keeps unrelated products out of view while you prepare the collection changes.
Edit a product’s complete manual collection list
Use Product’s Manual Collections when you want to see and control the complete set of manual collections for a product.
- Find the product row in the Product Collections worksheet
- Click the + button in its Product’s Manual Collections cell
- Search or filter the collection picker by title, handle, or description
- Check each manual collection the product should belong to
- Uncheck each manual collection the product should leave
- Click Update cell with selected collections
The cell contains the selected collection handles as a comma-separated list. You can copy and paste a completed cell into other product rows when those products should have exactly the same collection memberships.
Be careful: Pasting into Product’s Manual Collections replaces the product’s complete manual collection list. Use an Action column when you only want to add or remove selected collections while preserving every other membership.
Add or remove products with Action columns
Action columns are the safer choice when you want to add or remove specific manual collection memberships without replacing a product's complete collection list.
The Collections template already includes these columns. To add one to another Products (no variants) or Products (with variants) worksheet:
- Select an empty column with a non-green header
- Click the green
button in the column header
- Select Action Column
- Choose Add to Collections or Remove from Collections
- Click Save Column
To use the new column:
- Click the + button in an action cell
- Check the manual collections to add or remove for that product
- Click Update cell with selected collections
- Repeat for other products, or copy the completed action cell to rows that need the same change
- Click Preview changes and review the pending collection actions
- Click Sync to Shopify when the preview is correct
On a Products (with variants) worksheet, the action applies to the parent product for that variant row. A Products (no variants) worksheet is usually easier for collection work because each product appears once.

Preview and sync the collection changes to Shopify
Updating a cell does not immediately change Shopify. Mixtable keeps the edits as drafts so you can review a large collection update before it reaches the store.
- Click Preview changes
- Review the affected products, collection actions, and pending values
- Return to the worksheet and correct anything unexpected
- Click Sync to Shopify when the preview is correct
Allow the sync to finish before checking collection membership in Shopify.
Collection membership troubleshooting
An automated collection is missing from the picker
The picker intentionally lists manual collections. To affect an automated collection, change the Shopify field used by its conditions, such as a tag, vendor, product type, price, or inventory value.
I copied a cell and removed other collection memberships
The Product’s Manual Collections cell represents the complete membership list. Restore the missing handles before syncing, or discard the draft edits and use Add to Collections for an additive change.
A product appears more than once in a Products (with variants) worksheet
Collection membership belongs to the parent product, not an individual variant. Action columns on variant rows update the parent product. A Products (no variants) or Product Collections worksheet is usually clearer because it shows one row per product.
The worksheet changed but Shopify did not
The values are still drafts. Click Preview changes, review the pending collection updates, then click Sync to Shopify.
Tip: After organizing the catalog, use Mixtable Analytics Spreadsheet to measure net sales, orders, and refunds by collection. Products can belong to several collections, so the same order activity can contribute to more than one collection row.
