Enable Shopify Inventory Tracking For Multiple Products
On this page
The Mixtable spreadsheet interface is a great tool for quickly enabling inventory tracking for multiple Shopify products at once and for tracking across multiple locations. There are two ways to accomplish this.
Note: Inventory in Shopify is stored against variants, not against the parent products. So for all the steps below, you need to be working in a Products (with variants) worksheet where each row represents a variant in Shopify. Keep in mind that by default, Shopify always creates a variant for a product.
Option 1 - Simply set inventory for a given variant
If inventory tracking is not currently enabled for one or more of your products, the simplest way to turn it on is to set an inventory quantity for a variant at one of your locations.
To do that, you need a column for that location’s stock. Click + Shopify data in the header row of an empty column, and the field picker opens and asks What should column E show?, with your column’s letter in place of E. Click Inventory in the list of sections on the left, then click Stock at followed by the location’s name. Make sure Available is chosen in the panel on the right, then click Save Column. The Shopify inventory guide covers these columns in detail.
Type the quantity into the variant’s cell. Then click Sync at the top right of the spreadsheet, review your changes in the preview that opens, and click Sync again. If Shopify isn’t tracking inventory for that variant yet, Mixtable turns tracking on first and then sets the quantity you entered. If the variant isn’t stocked at that location yet, Mixtable stocks it there as well.
Option 2 - Turn on the Track quantity field
The second way is to set the variant’s Track quantity field. A value of true tells Shopify to track inventory for that variant, and false turns tracking off.
- Click + Shopify data in the header row of an empty column, or choose Column > Add Shopify data… from the menu bar. The field picker opens
- Type Track quantity in the search box, or click Inventory in the list of sections on the left
- Click Track quantity, then click Save Column
- Enter
truefor every variant you want Shopify to track. You can fill the value down the column or paste it into many rows at once - Click Sync at the top right of the spreadsheet, review your changes in the preview that opens, then click Sync again
Tracking also matters for reporting. Mixtable Analytics Spreadsheet records day-by-day stock history only for variants that track inventory, so untracked variants show No inventory history in inventory analytics.
