Sales by Customer Template
On this page
The Sales by Customer template creates one row per Shopify customer and adds lifetime purchasing metrics beside their details.
What this template is for
Shopify shows you a customer’s history one profile at a time, which is fine for support and useless for planning. This template puts every customer in one sortable sheet, so you can work with your customer base as a whole:
- Identify the customers who genuinely fund your store, by spend rather than order count
- Build targeted lists for loyalty, win-back, or VIP campaigns, then export them
- See what each customer buys, so your outreach can be relevant
- Spot high-spend customers with heavy refund activity before you reward them
- Compare total spend against refunds and discounts before choosing who to reward
Because it is a spreadsheet, you can sort, filter, add formulas, and export the list to CSV or Excel for your email or ads platform.
Create the Sales by Customer spreadsheet
-
Install Mixtable Analytics Spreadsheet
-
Open your Mixtable dashboard and click Create spreadsheet at the top of the page. If you haven't created a spreadsheet yet, click Browse all templates below the dashboard's suggestions instead. In the Create spreadsheet window, find Sales by Customer under Analytics & Reporting, or type its name in the search box, and click it. Mixtable creates the spreadsheet and fills it with data from your Shopify store.
On your first visit to Mixtable Analytics Spreadsheet, you can also click Who are my best customers? on the dashboard to create this template in one step.
Columns included in the template
The template creates a Customer Sales worksheet with:
- Customer First Name
- Customer Last Name
- Total Order Count
- Total Order Gross Amount
- Total Order Discount Amount
- Total Order Refund Amount Excluding Tax
- Total Order Net Amount
- Average Order Value
- Product Categories Bought by Customer
- Product Types Bought by Customer
- Segments Customer is In
The product category values use Shopify’s standardized product taxonomy. Product Types Bought uses the custom product types assigned in your store.
How to use the template
- Sort by Total Order Net Amount to identify your highest-spending customers
- Compare Total Order Count with Average Order Value to separate frequent buyers from larger-basket buyers, since the two respond to very different marketing
- Use Product Categories Bought and Product Types Bought to find cross-sell openings, such as customers who buy one category and have never touched a related one
- Use Segments Customer is In to see which Shopify segments each customer currently qualifies for
- Review refund and discount amounts before adding anyone to a loyalty or VIP campaign
Add more customer analytics
Click + Shopify data in the header row of an empty column, or choose Column > Add Shopify data… from the menu bar. The field picker opens and asks What should column E show?, with your column’s letter in place of E. Click Sales & analytics in the list of sections on the left, then click a metric. Its settings open with that metric already chosen. Pick a time period if it asks for one, and click Save Column. Customer worksheets support additional metrics such as Customer Lifetime Value, shipping, tax, duties, additional fees, order quantities, attribution coverage, conversion time, return requests, and open returns where available.
Note: Customer Lifetime Value measures profit rather than spend. Mixtable calculates it as the customer’s Net Sales excluding tax, minus the estimated cost of the goods they bought, so it needs a Cost Per Item on every variant they purchased and shows N/A when one is missing. This template’s Total Order Net Amount column is still the one to sort by for cumulative spend.
Adding a recent-window metric beside the template’s all-time figures is especially useful: comparing all-time spend with the last 12 months separates your active customers from ones who spent heavily in the past and have since gone quiet.
For a guided starting point within an existing spreadsheet, add a worksheet, choose Reporting worksheet, and select Customer lifetime value & orders under Shopify data worksheet with analytics columns.
