Product Variant Sales Metrics Template
On this page
The Product Variant Sales Metrics template creates one row per Shopify variant, so sizes, colors, materials, and other options are compared individually instead of being averaged into a product total.
Why variant-level sales matter
Product totals are reassuring and slightly misleading. A shirt that looks healthy overall is often two sizes selling out repeatedly and three that have not moved since you bought them, and only a variant report shows you which is which.
That distinction drives real money:
- Reorder in the proportions customers actually buy, instead of an even spread across sizes
- Free up cash tied up in variants that never sell
- Catch one variant driving a whole product’s return rate, which usually points to something specific to that option
- Give your purchasing conversations SKU-level evidence rather than product-level averages
Create the Product Variant Sales Metrics spreadsheet
-
Install Mixtable Analytics Spreadsheet
-
Open your Mixtable dashboard and click Create spreadsheet at the top of the page. If you haven't created a spreadsheet yet, click Browse all templates below the dashboard's suggestions instead. In the Create spreadsheet window, find Product Variant Sales Metrics under Analytics & Reporting, or type its name in the search box, and click it. Mixtable creates the spreadsheet and fills it with data from your Shopify store.
Columns included in the template
The template creates a Variant Sales worksheet with:
- Product Title
- Handle
- Variant Title
- SKU
- Total Order Count
- Gross Quantity Sold
- Net Quantity Sold
- Returns
- Discounts
- Net Sales
The analytics columns use an all-time timeframe. The Returns column is Refund Count, meaning the number of distinct refunded orders associated with each variant.
How to use the template
- Sort by Net Quantity Sold to compare real demand across sizes, colors, and other options
- Compare Gross Quantity Sold with Net Quantity Sold to spot the variants customers order and then send back
- Read Returns and Total Order Count together before concluding a variant has a refund problem
- Compare Discounts with Net Sales to find variants that only sell on promotion
- Keep SKU visible whenever the report will be used for purchasing or inventory decisions
Add price, cost, inventory, and margin
You can add Shopify fields such as Price, Compare-at price, Cost per item, Barcode, option values, and Total inventory to the same worksheet. Sales beside inventory is the pairing that makes reorder decisions obvious at a glance.
To add a field or a metric, click + Shopify data in the header row of an empty column, or choose Column > Add Shopify data… from the menu bar. The field picker opens and asks What should column E show?, with your column’s letter in place of E. Type the field’s name in the search box, click it, and click Save Column. For an analytics metric, click Sales & analytics in the list of sections on the left, then click the metric. Its settings open with that metric already chosen: pick the time period and any optional filters, and click Save Column.
The Sales & analytics section also has an Inventory history group, calculated from your stock history, with the reorder metrics this report is made for: Days of Stock Left, Sell-Through Rate, Days Out of Stock, In-Stock Rate, Estimated Lost Sales, Inventory Turnover, and Dead Stock Units. Inventory history starts on October 1, 2023 and runs through yesterday. See Shopify inventory analytics.
For a ready-made profitability view, add a worksheet, choose Reporting worksheet, and pick Variant margin & inventory under Shopify data worksheet with analytics columns. It combines price, current cost, and inventory with Amount of Cost of Goods Sold, Gross Profit, % Gross Margin, Net Sales, and Net Quantity Sold.
Note: Cost, profit, and margin metrics depend on the variant’s current Cost per item value
